Alzheimers Dressing Tips:

Here are some tips for helping the Alzheimer patient with their dressing routine.

  • Try to keep the routine that the person is already used to-dressing at the same time and place every day.
  • Do not rush the person-let them dress at their own pace.
  • Use familiar clothing that is easy to put on and take off-not complicated layering or fasteners.
  • Privacy is important-do not take away that feeling.
  • Encourage independence by self dressing as much as possible. Handing over the clothing in the order it should be put on is sometimes all the aid that may be necessary. Or try layering the clothing in a pile according to the order it should be put on.
  • Weed out clothing from the closet that is not worn. Keep the choices simple-not overwhelming.
  • Keep dressing area clutter free and neat.
  • Label shelves and drawers with descriptions of thier contents. This makes locating clothing items easier.
  • If aided dressing does become necessary, minimize your involvement. Slipping on only one sleeve may be all the cue that is needed to finish putting on that garment.
  • Replace complicated closures with simple zippers or velcros-lessen the use buttons, belts and ties. Use simple to pull on elastic waist pants.
  • Replace nylons and pantyhose with knee highs or socks.
  • Mirrors may be frightening to a person who sadly does not recognize others or themselves. Remove if necessary.
  • Footwear should be slip resistant and easy to put on. Velcro closures or simple slip-ons work well.
  • Incontinence issues should be handled with sensitivity. Establish a regular bathroom routine to minimize accidents.
  • Bathrooms doors should be made easier to find with a picture of a toilet or a brightly painted door. Keep on a nighlight at night.
  • Person should be dressed in easy to remove clothing for bathroom use.
  • The use of chairpad and mattress underpads will greatly lessen the need for constant linen changes.
  • Incontinence pads may be helpful for overnight when others are not available to help with overnight bathroom use.
  • Consider the option of using a commode chair if bathroom is not nearby.
  • It may be necessary to use adult diapers. Do so with sensitivity and not shaming. Incontinence at this point something out of thier control.
